Author Carl Nettleton

Carl Nettleton

Nettleton Strategies’ founder Carl Nettleton brings a wealth of experience to the firm’s clients. Carl established Nettleton Strategies in 2007 to utilize the experience and skills developed during his career in government, public affairs, environmental protection, and organizational management.

Carl is a communications and government affairs professional known for his ability to provide critical insight and strategic problem solving to both old and new issues. He regularly brings clients innovative ideas and fresh ways to look at their issues.

As a senior counselor with strong networks in governmental, environmental, regulatory, media and business communities, Carl mixes who he knows with interpersonal skills that foster an atmosphere of cooperation and achieve client goals.

Carl specializes in forming complex community coalitions and handling high profile issues involving government, media, businesses and neighborhoods. A key strategy implemented in this work is facilitated mapping, the use of advanced geographic information systems (GIS) technology to create location-based consensus and create opportunities for collaboration and conflict resolution.

For more than 25 years, Carl has played a major role in addressing large infrastructure-related regional issues including the airport, water, waste water, and storm water. While working for the City of San Diego, He served as the public and media affairs director, the deputy director for general services and as a utilities customer advocate. He also headed community outreach for the waste water department’s $1.5 billion upgrade in the 1990s.

For more than a decade, Carl served as the chief executive of two ocean environmental organizations and has held executive positions in public, non-profit, and for-profit sectors. Recently, he founded OpenOceans Global, a new non-profit organization dedicated to creating an international ocean community to aggregate the world’s ocean data.

Carl is a past president of San Diego Kiwanis and has served on a number of local, state, and national committees and boards for various organizations. These currently include the San Diego Kiwanis Foundation, the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Water and Energy Committee, and Transportation, Housing and Land Use Committee, and Public Policy Committee.  He is a San Diego Chapter Co-Director and a member of the national and state advisory councils of Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2), a national community of business leaders who promote sound environmental policy that builds economic prosperity.

With this extensive experience in the public, private and non-profit sectors and a diverse assortment of abilities, Nettleton Strategies can quickly move into action for its clients.
