A 2014 Millennial study by Achieve found the top five factors for Millennials when deciding where to apply for a job are: 1. what a company does; 2. work culture; 3. company’s involvement with causes; 4. office environment and 5. diversity and HR awards. Additional factors such as personal contribution, and career growth are also important drivers that also influence career decisions.

In fact, 58% of Millennials cite career growth and professional development as their primary career goal. A recent article on college aged Millennials in Harvard Business Review, found that the two fundamental questions Millennial job seekers ask are “What is it like to work there?” and “What kind of growth can I expect?”. These factors are not typically found in job descriptions or are buried in company’s career pages.

Another important factor for Millennials is their interest in meaningful work. 92% of Millennials believe that business success should be based on more than just profit and 71% believe that meaningful work is among the top three most essential factors that define a successful career.

Promoting your workplace to Millennials

    Err…and what about people born in the 15-year gap between these two “generations”?

    In my opinion, Baby Boomers are not part of creating the economy anymore (or at least most of them aren’t) so comparing Millenials to them about the job market and workplace is a moot point.

    I think it is more relevant to compare the Millennials to their predecessors, Generation X. I think it is the Generation X people that can help the Millennials understand the current job market. Baby Boomers all have difficulties to relate with Millennials since the former have a negative perception of change while the later are just swimming through it all the time. Generation X could be considered as the bridge between these two very different generations.

    Many Millenials are still in their “development stage” and what they are looking for now might easily change in 5 years as they get further away from their teenage year / young adulthood and deeper into adulthood. Many of them might have a very distorted perception of what the workplace market actually has to offer especially considering the impeding civilizational crisis we have all participated in creating (yes, all generations are guilty of charge).
